Your battery system is the heart of your all the electrical in the van. Use our battery calculator to ensure you can run all of the lights, electronics, and appliances you envision.
BATTERY BASICS
Sleeping in a bed in the great outdoors is amazing, right!?!
It is. For sure. But… most people want some creature comforts. Ya know—cold beer (more importantly unspoiled food), lights, charge ports for their phones, fans to cool them off, etc.
Solar panels and your vehicle’s alternator will generate power but when there is no sun or when your car is no longer running… the power is no longer flowing. Which in turn means none of those creature comforts will function. Enter… BATTERIES! Batteries can take that power from the sun or your vehicle and store it so you can use that energy when it’s convenient to you.
A “house” battery refers to the battery storage you use to run your Van Life/RV accessories. This battery storage is separate from the vehicle’s starting battery.
Something should control the charging of the battery, something aptly named “charge controllers”.
A battery is a device that stores energy.
Batteries have ratings which tell you how much energy they can store. This rating is measured in Amp hours (Ah). Use the battery size calculator to determine what battery size you need.
Sealed lead acid/AGM and LiFePO4
12V is the most common voltage to work with as that is the voltage used on nearly every vehicle. As a result equipment like fans, fridges, lights, and much more can be easily found that is meant to run off 12V. For 95 out of 100 people a 12V battery voltage is what you should purchase.
A device necessary to properly charge, monitor and manage a battery.
A good battery management system will provide:
- Charge Protection: Make sure the right voltage and current is being delivered to the battery
- Discharge Protection: Make sure the battery voltage doesn’t get so low it will damage the battery’s cells
- Low-temp Cutoff: Make sure the battery doesn’t charge when it is too cold
- Over-temp protection: Make sure the battery doesn’t overheat from charging when it’s too hot
- Over current protection: Protect the battery against instantaneous current
- Short circuit protection: Protect the battery under a short circuit situation
- Cell balancing: Make sure the voltages of each individual cell within the battery are balanced.
